A letter from parents to their graduate

“It is hard to believe our baby is all grown up and graduating. Raising you has been the joy of our lives. We want the best for you, but we know you must make your own path and live your own life. We do not want to give you too much advice, so we will keep this short and sweet:

Aim low. Not so low that your life is awful, but low enough that you are not exposed to a chance of failure. Aim for something where you are happy enough and accept it. You will not feel as fulfilled as possible and you will know you are capable of more, but that is a small price to pay for avoiding the disappointment of failure.

You will think about aiming high and accomplishing amazing things, but remember these words: focus on failure. Even if there is a chance of success, fixate on your chances of failing. If any exist, do not move forward. You might think you can do it. You can. But you can also fail. Avoiding disappointment should be your highest priority, right next to avoiding criticism and having everyone approve of you.

Anyway, enough from us. We LOVE you so much! We are thrilled to see what you do in life.

Love,
Mom & Dad.”
