Actions have consequences. But what consequences? And when?
Humanity's greatest struggle is the delay between actions and consequences (good or bad). It always has been. It always will be. You can't change human nature, but you can improve yourself within it.
It's more than delaying gratification. It's recognizing that all your actions have eventual consequences. The more your actions stack up day by day, brick by brick, the more the consequences stack up along with them. You are an agent of cause and effect.
You can observe all your actions stacking up. You can't observe all the consequences stacking up. Most consequences don't show up until later, often much later.
Discipline keeps you engaged in actions that lead to good eventual consequences, even when you're uncertain when you will experience those consequences. It also keeps you away from actions that lead to dire eventual consequences.
Just because you don't see the consequences doesn't mean they aren't happening. Just because you haven't experienced them yet doesn't mean they aren't coming.
Brick by brick. Do the work.
