It’s impossible to see the events on campus at Utah Valley University where Charlie Kirk was shot and not feel raw emotions boiling up.
Strong, human, universal emotions.
Emotions that don’t care about agendas or labels, nor religion or politics. Emotions that only care about ethics and justice, about what is right and what is wrong. Emotions we’re all connected to in our shared humanity.
A 31-year old American citizen was murdered in front of a massive crowd while holding nothing more than a microphone and a conversation. He was discussing topics that affect people and the world, and debating the best course of action.
He listened to views and shared his own. He debated the merits of each.
That voice was eliminated. A husband was killed. A father was lost. A soul was taken.
And here we are, with our emotions swirling, boiling, pounding, trying to figure out how to move forward. What do we do now? How do we respond? What will we do with this raw sadness, fear, and anger?
That’s what each of must decide for ourselves. I know what I feel, but what will I do?
Will I use my emotion to justify impulsive reactions? Or will I use the energy underneath my emotions to fuel a more disciplined series of responses?
Feel what you feel. But remember, you don’t have to obey it. You don’t have to react the way your emotions tell you to react. You can choose. You must choose.
Not only your fate depends on it, but ours does, too.
Event + Response = Outcome. Do the work.
