If you were to map out your expectations for everything you would experience in a given week – for all your relationships, work, interactions, tasks, circumstances, literally everything – what percentage of your experiences do you think would match your expectations? Or alternatively, what percentage of a given week are you dealing with unexpected things?
Dealing with the unexpected is a large part of life’s experience. The unexpected is, ironically, entirely expected. Every meaningful aspect of your life has been full of unexpected things along the way — some pleasant, some unpleasant — and it will continue that way for the rest of your life.
There is no doubt you have expectations for how you would like today to go. And tomorrow. You have expectations for just about everything of any meaning and value to you, however minor – like your commute – or major – like the next step of your career. There is also no doubt that you will face a steady stream of unexpected elements woven into each day.
Expect to deal with the unexpected. Prepare for what you know is coming, even if you’re not sure what it’s going to be or when it’s going to show up. Train to respond to the unexpected, practically & emotionally, with discipline and skill.
Answer the call. Do the work.
