On Thinking: Part 1

Good processes executed with awareness, discipline, and confidence consistently produce great results. Consistency and results improve even more when the process is simple and systematic rather than complex and fragmented.

Every outcome is the result of the process that created it.

If we carry that principle down to a personal level, decisions and actions result from your thought process. Decisions have impact. Actions have consequences. Therefore, outcomes and experiences are not only the result of your choices and actions but also the thought processes that produce them.

What is a thought process? What is your thought process?

I might ask a series of questions like this:

  • Where do you start?
  • What is your priority?
  • What are the steps?
  • In what order?
  • When are you done?
  • How do you assess the output of your thinking?
  • How do you evaluate the quality of your thought process?

E+R=O is the non-negotiable cornerstone of a disciplined thought process.

It is the foundation of good thinking. Without the simple process of E+R=O, higher-level thinking will collapse due to the lack of a stable and secure foundation. I am not concerned with whether anyone calls it E+R=O. Call it whatever you want. Use the terms or labels you prefer. I like E+R=O: Event + Response = Outcome.

What matters is executing the process with awareness, discipline, and confidence.

Tomorrow, in On Thinking: Part 2, we will review the simple, systematic E+R=O thought process.

Answer the call. Do the work.
