On Thinking: Part 3

If you want to be great at discipline, or even just good enough, you can’t rely on an authority to tell you what to do or rules to follow.

If you want to become a little or a lot more disciplined, you need to develop the willingness and ability to think and decide for yourself.

This requires awareness, learning, practice, and training. Otherwise you’re just obedient to authority figures and compliant with the rules created for you. In that approach, your choices don’t matter that much.

In real life, where you are the authority over you and set the rules you live by, you don’t possess a permanent discipline that happens with effortless habit. You’re thinking and choosing moment-to-moment where to be on your scale of discipline. Every moment refreshes anew.

You don’t arrive at some point as “a disciplined person.”

You’re only disciplined when you’re thinking, choosing, and acting on it.

Answer the call. Do the work.
