Yesterday, I wrote about getting “really disciplined and really good at the really simple” with E+R=O. Several of you asked a great follow-up question: “How do you actually build this into a system that works consistently?”
Here’s how simple disciplines become powerful systems.
When you focus on applying E+R=O consistently, over time you get good at using these three questions across a wide range of situations:
- What outcome am I trying to create?
- What is the reality of the event?
- What response do I need?
It takes time to build this capability. It takes patience. That’s why most people don’t do it. They look for secrets or more complex frameworks.
The key is to focus on mastering E+R=O in one or two types of situations at a time, until you can apply it well in almost any circumstance. Start with situations that matter most to you right now but also feel manageable and not intimidating. Practice the three questions until they become part of your normal way of thinking.
To outsiders, your decision-making will seem sophisticated and complex. But to you, it will just be simple skills executed through a simple system. Nothing complex about it. It just takes discipline and time to develop. This is the power of mastery - what looks effortless to others is actually the result of disciplined practice.
The good news? You already know the framework. Now you just need to build the system through consistent practice.
This week, pick two situations where you’ll deliberately practice the E+R=O questions, starting today. Fresh situations, same framework, deeper mastery.
Event + Response = Outcome. Do the work.
