Turn awareness into action

Yesterday, we talked about curiosity as the wedge that widens self-awareness. Today, let's talk about what to do with that awareness once you have it.

Self-awareness without action is just interesting information. Remember, turn self-awareness into self-discipline.

A simple way to do that is by identifying what gets in the way of the principles you want to live.

Let's say you believe in continuous improvement. You want to keep learning and getting better. But as you get curious (the wedge), you discover what slows you down: your ego, image, and other people's opinions. You don't like being wrong, admitting you were ineffective, or getting criticized.

Ego creates friction against improvement. When ego goes up, improvement goes down.

Simplify the relationship: "Put improvement before ego."

This statement acknowledges that ego exists and will pull at you. But it also gives you permission to feel that pull and still choose improvement first.

You're not denying ego or eliminating it. You're just putting improvement ahead of it in the priority line.

That's how you turn awareness into discipline. You can do that with any principle or behavior pattern you notice within yourself, if you're curious enough to look. That's how the wedge becomes action.

Event + Response = Outcome. Do the work.
