The Bricklayer’s Proverb

We’re all building something. In our lives it’s our bodies, our relationships, and our families. In our careers it’s our skills, our teams, and our organizations.

Some of what we’re building crosses over between our personal and professional environments, like our mindsets, our courage, and our patience.

In the process of building anything — personal or professional, individual or group, physical or mental — remember The Bricklayer’s Proverb:

Adjust the stone to fit the line, not the line to fit the stone.

The line is the standard and you are the stone. Sometimes you draw the line and set whatever standards you choose. Sometimes you’re measuring up to a line you didn’t create, but was drawn by someone else or simply exists in the environment.

First understand and choose the lines in your life. Then work to fit your stones to them.

Everything is training for something. Do the work.
