The Unglamorous Road to Greatness

If you want to get good at anything, there’s a way and it’s not complex. It’s not confusing. It’s not necessarily exhausting either. You can get good, even great, at almost anything. Here’s how . . .

  • Discover and clarify the most simple and impactful elements of the skill. This may be harder than it sounds. A lot of people get stuck here because they get too fancy, too complex, or take on too much. Listen to what people who execute that skill at an elite level say matters the most. Follow their lead. This will most likely be between three and six things. Stick to the absolute core basics that have to be done well and nothing more.
  • Go get 200 - 400 sessions of reps at it. The sooner you start, the faster you’ll get better. The more reps you get and more frequently you get them, the better and faster you’ll learn through real experience.
  • Choose one element of the skill to focus on during each session. This can stay consistent across many sessions, change each time, or rotate systematically.

Here’s why I love this:

  1. It’s an insanely reliable way to make massive improvements in anything.
  2. All I have to do is that day’s work then let it compound over time like the investment it is.
  3. Every time I do this I gain a huge advantage because most everyone else gets bored, frustrated, or impatient with the process long before they’ve done enough work to deliver the skill ROI they expect.

Remember: if you want to get good at anything, there’s a way and it’s not complex. Stay simple.

Everything is training for something. Do the work.
