E+R+O is the tool I use to quickly and clearly separate what I do control from what I don’t control.
I don’t control events. I control my response. My ability to create and earn the outcomes I want depends on my response, not on my events. Events will be what they are. If I’m going to create excellence and find fulfillment, it’s my job to adjust my response to changing circumstances.
Everything evolves. The whole world is constantly changing. E+R=O is real and relentlessly marches on whether or not you recognize it.
As events change — slowly or suddenly, moderately or drastically — some aspects of your response must continue, and some must change.
Events change. Your response must change with them.
You can complain about changing events, but that response doesn’t work. It won’t change the events back. It will only make the outcomes worse.
Figure out how to respond to changing events to produce excellent outcomes in new circumstances. That’s what excellence does!
